LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE - Shoppers usually go into a Sport Chalet to buy shoes. But in recent days the company's 55 stores have been deluged with visitors dropping off used shoes to be given to victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. "I've heard that we already have in excess of 68,000 pairs of donated shoes - and we only started this on Friday," said Jacqueline Collard, Sport Chalet's senior marketing manager. "It's been overwhelming. We weren't quite sure what to expect, and the interest level has been far more than we expected." Swiss Rolex Replica Watch The La Canada Flintridge-based retail chain is working with Soles4Souls, a Nashville charity that is committed to collecting and donating more than 250,000 pairs of gently-used shoes to Haiti's earthquake victims. The organization has partnered with Operation Compassion, a charity that mobilizes support for victims of natural disasters around the world, to transport and distribute the aid. Thirty containers of supplies, including work boots, rain boots, children's athletic shoes and clothing items, are already en route to Haiti. And the need is critical. On Monday, the death toll from the quake was estimated to be as high as 200,000, as emergency workers, U.S. troops and others sifted through the debris in search of survivors. Visitors to any Sport Chalet store will be able to drop off shoes through Jan. 31. Wayne Elsey, founder and CEO of Soles4Souls, said Sport Chalet is providing help when the need is crucial. "We deeply appreciate the support of Sport Chalet and their customers in helping us provide shoes to survivors and volunteers as they work in horrific conditions," he said. Craig Levra, Sport Chalet's chairman and CEO, said Southern California lives under the same threat of serious earthquakes, so it was a natural response for the company to help. Fake Gucci Watches "Being reminded of how fragile our world is, and seeing the devastation that has affected so many, makes it evident that our continued partnership with charities like Soles4Souls is more relevant than ever," Levra said in a statement. embroidered patches Sport Chalet has placed the donation bins in the front of its stores to make shoppers well aware of the campaign. "We've had to empty the bins, put the shoes in back and then bring the bins back up several times," Collard said. "People have just been super generous. When they buy new shoes they put their old ones there. And we've had tons of interest from other groups that have gone out to gather up shoes from the community and leave them with us." Collard said the retailer was initially planning to send the donated shoes to Soles4Souls' Las Vegas facility. But so many shoes have been collected that they may have to be shipped directly to the charity's Tennessee headquarters. "We still have to work out some of the logistics," she said. "But this is nice and it feels good." 626-962-8811, Ext. 2701 Other articles: http://fearnot.com/phpfox/index.php?do=/public/blog/view/id_289/title_Parents-join-kids-for-creative/http://course.zjnu.cn/edupsy/Blog/View/?262http://chud.com/community/index.php/public/blog/view/id_304/http://www.mystreetracingvideos.com/blog/view/id_80/title_Take-it-easy-with-Acer-TravelM/http://www.eworkexchange.com/True-Religion-Opens-Retail-Sto.html

Re: Operation Christmas Child While not wishing to reignite the acrimonious debate that took place concerning the Operation Christmas Child (OCC) shoe box scheme in The Bath Chronicle last year, I feel it is important to correct an inaccurate statement made by the local organiser, David Dawson, in your edition of November 19. He is quoted as saying "All the schools in the area are involved". This is simply untrue. Given the concerns about the organisation's evangelical aims, and the methods by which it operates, many local headteachers and school governing bodies eschew the scheme in favour of other charities whose purpose is to offer help without proselytising. Replica Dewitt Watches There are a number of such shoe box schemes, including Link Romania, which enable school children in the UK to learn about poverty and the value of altruistic giving, without supporting OCC's less than transparent tactics. Nationally, numerous organisations - and many churches public statements derogating other religions. A quick visit to the Samaritan's Purse US website will appraise readers of the scheme's stated purpose in their own words - "as a tool for evangelism". 'And Dior Bags what's wrong with that?' was the Chronicle editor's comment last year in his column. Leaving aside the ostracising of converts from their families and communities, and the fact that in some Islamic communities the penalty for apostasy can be death, is it appropriate for the kindness and generosity of UK school children and their families to be misused and exploited in such an underhand way? Schools can easily go elsewhere for their charitable Christmas giving, and fortunately, many do. A Senior figure at one of Scunthorpe biggest employers has apologised for 'stupid' remarks he made about the town at a high profile conference. John Baines, senior trading controller for Nisa-Today's, claimed one of the town's main industries was 'handbag theft', and was reported as saying local women wore mattresses on their backs 'in case they meet someone they know'. He then Dimmable LED Down Light K1018 2x3x1W / 2x3x3W told his audience: "If you want to know what Scunthorpe looked like in the 1970s ... go there tomorrow." The comments were made during a speech at the 16th annual conference of the national Federation of Wholesale Distributors in Oxford. But his employers at Nisa-Today's have distanced themselves from the remarks, which they said were 'stupid and ill informed' and do not reflect the view of the company. Chief executive of Nisa-Today's, Neil Turton, said: "John Baines works for Nisa and we think what he did was stupid and we do not agree with it at all. "Here we have one of our employers at a conference who tried to be funny. It was stupid and he was ill advised. "It is not the company's view at all. It has utterly nothing to do with the company's view. "We would like to place on record our apologies to the people of the town. "We just think it was completely wrong. It was meant in humour but people do not take it like that." The comments came to t10 led tube light after they were printed online by the Off Licence News. Graham Holter, the publication's group editor, said he was reporting on the annual conference discussing the drinks retailing and wholesaling sectors. He said: "The comments were intended to be funny and were taken as such. All banter really." But Mr Baines, who has apologised to his colleagues at the Scunthorpe-based offices where he works, has extended his apology to the town's folk. He said: "I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to the town and the people of Scunthorpe. "The comment was made light-heartedly and I am very sorry for any offence it has caused." Nisa-Today's has 195 people working in Scunthorpe, but only a small number of them are in the massive new development at Normanby Enterprise Park. embroidered patches However, Bibby has 651 people working there in distribution for Nisa-Today's. Mr Turton said the company had been in the town for 18 years and added: "The company is in the town because it is where we want to be. "We have a great relationship with the town and our employees." He stressed the company announced last month plans to invest pounds3.75-million in Scunthorpe. And to reinforce its commitment to the town and its people, the company yesterday announced it would be making a pounds250 donation to Crosby Primary School's centenary year in 2008 to help fund its celebration activities.
