It is the perennial question with which women have tortured themselves since time immemorial: why, exactly, Juicy Couture Handags Replica do men cheat? Why do seemingly supportive partners, who had all the hallmarks of loyal marriage material during the courtship period, become serial philanderers once the gold band is in place?

''It's simple,'' says Peadar De Burca, the playwright and comedian. ''It's because they can. Or, rather, because you ladies let them think that they can. So they do.''

Harsh words I hear you say. Mr De Burca, however, has a wealth of research - gleaned at the coalface - to illustrate his assertion. He is not, one hastens to add, one of the aforementioned unfaithful (married to Wanda just one year and the proud father of three-month- old Lilly Lola). Instead, he has spent the past five years teasing out doleful tales from 250 men who wander, and 60 women who have endured their husbands' dalliances.

From this Thursday De Burca will present a comic monologue at the Edinburgh Fringe entitled: Why Men Cheat, an uproarious and, at times, poignant show that lays bare the aims and origins of male infidelity.

''Sadly, my conclusion has been that, all too often women simply won't challenge their cheating men,'' he says with a shake of the head. ''Or their self-esteem has been so battered by their husband's behaviour that these talented, attractive and intelligent women convince themselves that they have too much to lose if they walk away or show him the door.''

De Burca, a theatre director before he found success as a comedy writer, comes from a long line of philanderers, and has a healthy respect for monogamy. But he became fascinated by the subject when it ripped apart marriages within his own family circle. ''Witnessing the pain some of my female relatives suffered was heartbreaking. The effect was that, from early on, I swore I was never going to become one of those men. So he set out to investigate the subject, amassing a wealth of hilarious though thoughtprovoking stories from men who cheat.

Encouraging philanderers to spill the beans wasn't much of a challenge, he says. ''Get men to talk about their extramarital exploits? Get them not to talk would be harder,'' he says. ''Never underestimate the male ego. blancpain replica watches Men just love to boast of their conquests. Call out the word "cheat" on any street and a dozen guilty men will look furtively over their shoulder. Yet of the women I spoke to, all but three forgave their husbands and took them back. Which was, of course, a green light to the men. My advice to women? Show your confidence. Let him know he's lucky to have you. And that if he abuses your trust, he's out.''

De Burca's interviewees cross the social divide and encompass all age groups. (Beware doctors, by the way. They are by far the most likely to cheat, he says. A legacy, he believes, of the fact that they are surrounded by females at work and that women are susceptible to their role as healers.)

Some of the stories, he says, defied belief. Such as the cheating lawyer who proudly boasted that, on being found out, he made his wife feel so bad - because he claimed he cheated because he had no choice - that she ended up apologising. ''He told her that he had found solace elsewhere because she had become cold, sex was no longer as regular as it once was, and he had found affection elsewhere. He came back to me saying she now felt so guilty that she kept apologising to him. You can't believe how arrogant he was about it. And, of course, it was carte blanche to continuReplica Watches

Byline: LIZ JONES

AT THE airport last week to catch a flight for work, I literally had to shield my eyes from an array of terrible, obscene crimes -- not only against fashion, but against humanity.

While the women off on holiday looked pretty, fresh and cool -- lots of khaki cropped trousers, simple shirts, sandals and squashy, colourful bags -- the men were monstrosities.

There were hairy thighs on show, and armpits (I don't want a bare male armpit hovering inches from my nose as I settle in my seat). There were man boobs and, worse, bulky, dirty rucksacks.

And so I began to wonder: why is it that the young and middle-aged abandon all sense of taste and simple grooming when they leave the confines of their office for two weeks in the sun?

Why do they dress like oversized toddlers, in trainers, shorts and vests; or, worse, nasty nylon football tops? And while women have, on the whole, learned to dress according to their size and shape, why do men still assume they have Cristiano Ronaldo's abs, arms and thighs?

I talked to a world-renowned expert in this matter -- Matt McCormack, head of menswear buying at John Lewis. For those of you not clued up, John Lewis is rapidly becoming the key destination for men who know they need to stop shopping in Next, but are not confident enough to go Replica IWC Watches to boutiques or super-trendy destinations like Urban Outfitters.

Basically, John Lewis does not scare them. I asked Mr McCormack to give me a snapshot of how men buy clothes.

'We know from credit card activity that women buy a lot of clothes for men. We also know they influence men a lot: we see couples on the shop floor -- though this only happens when it comes to holiday wear. Women don't influence what men wear for the office. For suits, ties and shirts, men generally shop on their own.'

So it's a woman's fault if her man wears socks with Birkenstocks on holiday?

'Well, she can influence him and buy him things. And I do think men are dressing much better than they were.

'But men will often still pull on a pair of shorts they've had for years, or an old top, because that's what they feel comfortable in. Women will think more seasonably, but men have only one consideration on holiday: Is it comfortable?'

So shopping for holiday clothes is a bit of a battleground? 'Women tend to want their men to dress smartly on holiday. They are more concerned about what a man will wear in the evening at a restaurant than what he puts on for the beach.'

And the most common mistakes that men make? 'It can be a car crash,' he says wearily. 'They might pick up really colourful linen. And trousers will be too tight or too baggy.'

I always think men are over-confident when it comes to buying clothes. Unlike women, who always try to disguise their faults, men seem to dress as though they have Brad Pitt's body and Johnny Depp's head. McCormack disagrees. 'Men have insecurities, definitely. They come in and say they don't want to show their arms. We get a lot of men who say: "I don't want to look like a fatty."'

Can shops advise them on dressing for their shape? 'Definitely. We offer advice on fit, length and style. And men are no longer afraid to ask for help.

'I think we are returning to the days when men had a relationship with a tailor, rather than just buying something baReplica Watches

BONE plays an important role in regulating blood sugar and can contribute to diabetes, research has said.

A study published in the journal Cell found that resorption, a process by which bones are destroyed and replaced with new tissue, stimulates the release of insulin into the bloodstream, in turn improving glucose use by cells.

The same scientists had earlier shown that osteocalcin, a hormone released by bone, "switched on" insulin production and increased cellular uptake of glucose.

Both these mechanisms are impaired in people with type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease that affects more than two million men and women in the UK.

The discovery could lead to more targeted drugs for the condition.

Study leader Dr Gerard Karsenty said: "Bone may become a new target in the treatment of type 2 diabetes ... Osteocalcin could become a treatment."

"WHAT manner of men are these?" said Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery as he reflected on the events of the Second World War. "They are, in fact, men apart, every man an emperor."

He was referring to the Parachute Regiment, an elite fighting force created 70 years ago at the insistence of Prime Minister Winston Churchill. It was in the summer of 1940 when the old bulldog put through the call.

He had quickly noted how effective German paras had been in the early months of the war and thought Britain could do better.

Time and again, in the decades since, he has been proved right. From Arnhem to Afghanistan, the Paras have lived up to their motto "Ready For Anything".

Marc Jacobs Bags

It is a creed that never dies, even long after men have left the service. When times of remembrance and reunion come around, they are instantly recognisable by the distinctive regimental tie, a telltale wings badge on the lapel, and the coveted red beret.

"Once a Para, always a Para," says Mark Holding, a 49-year-old former Territorial Army recruit who served with 144 Parachute Medical Squadron and is now treasurer of the Nottingham branch of the regimental association. He says that despite being able to trace spinal problems, which now prevent him from working, to an injury suffered on a Paras training course years ago.

"Everybody goes through hard training and the first thing you want to do is fight. I am too old and unfit, otherwise I would be there," he said.

His fellow officers in the Nottingham branch are president John Needham, 76, a Beeston man who did 22 years with the Paras; and 70- year-old secretary Bill Cumming, from Long Eaton, a five-year veteran from the late 1960s. Their service covered different eras but the ideals never changed.

"We joined because the Parachute Regiment is the best," said former Staff Sergeant Cumming. "They're unlike the rest of the British Army. When they go into action they usually drop behind enemy lines and are always surrounded.

"I feel I'm part of a brotherhood.

bedat and co

We're still part of the family."

Ex-Warrant Officer John Needham gave up his job at Raleigh to join the Paras.

"There was, and still is, nothing better. I served for 22 years. Cyprus at the latter end of the EOKA troubles, Kenya, Kuwait, Northern Ireland in 1969 on the Shankhill Road. We were not very popular."

Ulster and the troubles brought another aspect of the brotherhood into focus. They never forget fallen comrades.

In May 1971, Sergeant Michael Willetts, of 3Para, was killed, shielding civilians from an IRA bomb. Nearly 40 years on, his former comrades continue to pay their respects. "We visited his grave recently and we celebrate his memory every year," said Mr Needham.

"We are a band of brothers," said Mark Holding, adding that Nottingham had always been a strong Paras recruiting area.

The regimental association meets on the third Monday of the month at Beeston Royal British Legion club. There are around 40 ex-Paras on the books but, says Bill Cumming, there are many more out there.

"We are ready to help them if they want us, but many come home and feel they have had enough and do not want to carry on with the regiment. But that doesn't mean they are not still proud of it."

Last weekend, as I sat comfortably in the shade at Dave Hall Plaza enjoying the Women in Jazz Festival, I looked around and thought to myself: "Man, I'm lucky."

authentic discount handbags

I was lucky because I live in a place where I was able to drive easily to a free outdoor concert in a lovely downtown spot, park hassle-free nearby, visit with friends and hear some great music.

And it wasn't the first time I've had that warm feeling. I get it when I visit Canal Street Tavern and hear good new stuff. I get it every time I look up to see the constellation in the ceiling of the Schuster Center's grand auditorium. I get it when I stop to look at my favorite painting at the Dayton Art Institute. (It's the big, greenish Joan Mitchell abstract in the modern gallery, if you're nearby.)

I feel lucky a lot around here, moving through the wonderful arts landscape in the Dayton area, and I don't feel silly saying it. I've been lucky as well to have had the chance to write this column, from which I've been able to comment, and possibly even help shape, that landscape.

This is the last of those columns, after about 15 years of them, as I move to a new job with Cox Media Group Ohio -- one that I'm enjoying a great deal, but which isn't leaving me the time to keep "Culture Clash" going. Alas.

But the years I've spent writing it have left me quite fond of the arts scene I've reported on, and the people in it. Talking to artists, musicians and other writers about their work has informed my own knowledge and opinions about art, and changed the way I consume it.

Throughout the years, I've become, oddly, both more and less critical -- more discerning and thoughtful about stuff (or so I like to think), but also far more forgiving of work I might once have dismissed with a sniff. Just because I might not like something, I realize, doesn't mean it doesn't have a place; if it means something to somebody else, then cool. Maybe it's my problem that I don't get it.

Growing a little less acerbic over time has meant the kind of column I manolo blahnik pictures wrote changed, too -- a lot less trashing stuff, or deploring the state of pop culture, and more active reporting about what is going on in and around the Dayton-area arts community.

And as I move on, I'm happy to report that the arts community is as bustling as ever, though it is also undergoing profound, and difficult, changes. The news coverage of this weekend's Cityfolk Festival most recently emphasized the biggest challenge, that of finding funds for the arts in a rough economy as companies reduce their gifts and government grants are drying up.

In Dayton, that has meant staff cuts and belt-tightening for major organizations like the DAI, and pressure from donors and foundations on arts administrators to merge or combine office operations of various groups, which they have been reluctant to do. It may yet mean the end of some organizations, though so far we have been fortunate on that score.

All this is happening, too, at a time when the downtown-based arts lacks an obvious, strong leader who is able to forcefully articulate the needs and concerns of the whole arts community, and get big things done. The closest anyone has come in several years to filling that role is Dr. Mike Ervin, who has made sure the arts have a seat at the table as downtown is reimagined and, one hopes, revived.

A WOMAN who founded an hereditary breast cancer helpline is calling on the region's primary care trusts (PCTs) to pay a share of the running costs.

Wendy Watson, 55, was one of the first people in UK to undergo a preventative double mastectomy in 1992.

It came after she discovered nine out of ten women in three generations of her family had contracted breast cancer and six of them had died.

Replica Michele Watches

Wendy, of Derbyshire, then set up the 24-hour National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline in 1996 and it has since taken more than 80,000 telephone calls.

Wendy said 56 out of 152 PCTs do not pay the Pounds 422 recommended annual contribution to running the helpline, including NHS Hull and NHS East Riding of Yorkshire.

Now, her daughter, Becky Measures, 28, of Chesterfield, is taking part in a tandem skydive in Nottinghamshire on August 7 to raise the money for the region's contribution.

Wendy said: "For every PCT that doesn't pay, we have a skydiver.

"NHS Hull can manage to Buy a Pounds 500,000 yacht, but it can't pay Pounds 422 for an essential service.

"The local outlets, like Macmillan Cancer Support, give out the helpline details.

"We help anybody who is concerned about their increased risk of developing breast cancer."

Becky, 28, who also had a preventative double mastectomy in 2006, said: "We have taken numerous calls from the Hull area.

"Jumping out of an aeroplane is not something I have ever wanted to do, but I know what a difference it's going to make.

wholesale lingerie "We are having to go to these lengths to support something that should be there anyway."

Mrs Watson said it costs about Pounds 110,000 to run the helpline each year and it only receives about Pounds 38,000 from PCTs.

Susan Raettig, 77, of west Hull, is the former chairman of the Hull and East Riding cancer patient involvement group and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1981.

Mrs Raettig, who has regular check-ups, said she is disappointed the PCTs in Hull and the East Riding do not contribute to the running costs of the helpline. "I think it is really bad because it is a recognised helpline and people from this area use it," she said.

"After all, they are only asking for Pounds 422 a year. What's that? I think it's dreadful."

A spokesman for both PCTs said advice and information on hereditary breast cancer is available online and over the telephone through charities such as Breast Cancer Care, and this was identified through a Department of Health assessment.

The spokesman said: "On the basis of this assessment, the decision was taken not to commission or provide grants to any further specific support service providers, including the Hereditary Replica Watches Breast Cancer Helpline."

The PCTs said the decision was not based on cost.

The spokesman said: "To clarify, National Institute for Clinical Excellence guidelines do not place any obligation on NHS organisations to provide a telephone support line for familial breast cancer.

I WAS upset at Richard Littlejohn's criticism of Dorset 'plods' attending the Olympics to study security (Mail). 'Is this in case Al Qaeda plans a U-boat attack on Poole Harbour in 2012?' he asks.

Perhaps he's unaware that Dorset is hosting all the sailing events in 2012, not in Poole Harbour but Weymouth.

Large parts of Dorset are gearing up for the arrival of the sailing elite and their entourage, not just for the Olympic weeks but months in advance, staying in and around our towns.

In these troubled times, it is feasible that a terrorist attack could occur in any town or county acting as host to a part of the Olympics.

It seems the norm these days to knock the police (and some of this I agree with) but calling them 'plods' suggests they're country bumpkins, incapable of policing anything more than a vicar's tea party.

We Silver Brooch residents and police of Dorset manage to cope when the various political parties drop in for their annual conferences. And Bournemouth hosts one of largest influx of youngsters in

A few customers braved the mud and gravel. The trees, their green needles beaded with moisture, looked as lush and green as ever.

At area Christmas tree lots, the weather over the weekend was great for Douglas firs and Monterey pines but put a damper on business.

"This is the first really big weekend of the year," George Enriquez, manager of L&S Tree Lot in Fontana, said under inclement skies Friday. "If the rain keeps them away, at least the trees will be in great shape next weekend."

While the cool weather and ample moisture kept the Douglas firs, Grand firs and other trees green and supple, it kept more in stock than desired at L&S.

cheap coach purses Enriquez, who was digging irrigation ditches to draw water away from sporadic customers, said he had 1,300 trees in stock and needed to pick up the sales pace.

The weather had no effect on prices, which range from $20 for small saplings to around $130 for 14-foot firs.

Fresh-cut Christmas trees, live and green and aromatic, are replica breitling watches still a popular choice, managers of mom-and-pop lots say. In an era of mass production, synthetics and big-box retailers infringing on their market, tree lots focus on quality and authenticity, said Kim Buoye, who has owned and run Greenspot Farms tree lot in Mentone for more than two decades.

At Greenspot, a sprawling lot of roughly 4,000 trees nestled against the foothills, kids' games and farm animals add to the allure of getting a fresh, real tree. Prices there range from $10 to $90 for Monterey pines, redwoods and cedars, Buoye said.

"Ten years ago, there was a dozen farms out here all doing well," Buoye said. "Now, with Lowe's and Wal-Mart selling trees, there are fewer of us. We go with tradition and family fun themes, and that has kept us up for a long time."

But Buoye, like Enriquez to the west, said the soggy weather had her lot poised for a big week LED spotlight and huge weekend ahead.

"If it doesn't clear up, we could have a down year. But if it does, all heck could break loose with everybody rushing for a tree."

Bill Richardson's presidential campaign began in the Silver State-it could end there too.

Theresa Navarro is nervous.

She's hiding it well. If you learn anything from living in Nevada for 30 years it's a good poker face. But her hands betray her as she stands in the parking lot outside the Nevada Appeal newspaper in Carson City, restlessly thumbing her cell phone like a string of rosary beads.

Two months ago, Navarro-a Reno real estate agent-was extolling the virtues of granite counters and French doors while peddling two-bed, one-bath condos to newlyweds. Now she's singing the praises of renewable energy and international diplomacy in her efforts to sell a relatively unknown 59-year-old man to the American public.

And today Gov. Bill Richardson is running late. Navarro-the northern Nevada field organizer for Richardson's presidential campaign-has spent weeks preparing for his arrival: The phone calls have been made, security checks finished and itineraries set. All that's left is the waiting.

It's a clear, blustery Ash Wednesday morning in the sun-baked foothills of the snowcapped Sierra Nevadas. In an hour, Richardson will join seven other Democratic presidential contenders in the nation's first candidate forum of the 2008 election. In the meantime, he's scheduled to press the flesh at the Nevada Appeal, where a spillover crowd of approximately 400 people will watch a live television feed of catalog printing the forum being held down the street at the Carson City Community Center. But he has to show up first.

Navarro is flanked in the parking lot by eight more Richardson supporters, volunteers and employees. Like the rest, Navarro is a true believer.

"I have done some [regional] campaigns in the past that I may not have fully believed in, but I was doing them for the party," Navarro says. "This is different. The energy level is so much higher when you know you could actually help put somebody in the White House who you truly believe in."

A shiny black Dodge Durango pulls up to the curb. Mike Stratton, a veteran political consultant and senior campaign advisor, steps out of the driver's seat and walks around to open the passenger door. Richardson pauses in the passenger seat to straighten his tie, then steps out and begins shaking hands with his welcoming party. I'm glad some people believe the Bible's account of Noah's ark. In the town of Schagen, in the Netherlands, a man has taken the story seriously and built a true-to-size replica of Noah's ark.

Dutchman Johnan Huibers felt that people might appreciate the truth of the biblical story better if they could see the thing as it really was. I mean, it really is hard to imagine one man and his sons building an ocean liner of that huge size at a time in history when there were no power tools!

A contractor by trade, Huibers started the project in 2005 and built the ark himself with the help of his son, Roy. But he did use modern tools.

The Bible gives the measurements of the ark as 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. The cubit, an old Egyptian measurement, is generally thought to be about 18 inches, which makes the length of the boat two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house -- practically the size of a modern ocean liner.

Inside the replica, life-size models of various animals are included and future plans are to include a petting cheap coach purses zoo with real animals on the top deck. There is also enough space allowed for a 50- seat theater inside near the keel where a video about Noah's ark will be shown.

Recently opened to the public, one visitor who saw the ark was amazed. "It's past comprehension," Mary Louise Starosciak said. "I know the story of Noah, but I had no idea the boat would have been so big."

Huibers, a firm Bible believer, said he is hopeful the project will renew interest in Christianity in the Netherlands, where church attendance has fallen dramatically in the past 50 years.

Time and time again the subject of Noah's ark surfaces. Sometimes the matter is treated favorably and sometimes not. Some have claimed to have found the ark embedded in a glacier somewhere on the mountain range that includes the biblical Ararat, and others have squashed the story by declaring their searches have found nothing.

The late Ron Wyatt, who had a Web site about the ark, told how satellite photos taken some years earlier by Arthur Brandenburger of Ohio State University showed a boat-like formation on Mount Ararat. The photos so intrigued Wyatt that he decided to investigate further.

Not long after this, a small earthquake in the area caused the formation to be exposed even more and the structure could be measured at that time. It turned out to be the dimensions of the ark as given in the biblical account.

Still, it was only a formation in the mud -- nothing that could be proved to have been a wooden boat.

Later investigation did reveal the presence of metal, which, when excavated, turned out to be large rivets such as those that would have held replica hublot watches together wooden joints. Later still, a piece of petrified wood was also excavated from that area.

Throughout history there have been a number of people who have claimed to have seen the ark. Berosus, a high priest in Babylon, stated that Noah's ark could still be seen on a mountain in Armenia, and about 400 years before Christ, the historian Abydenos agreed with him.

The historian Josephus stated that the ark could still be seen in his day, the first century after Christ, and even Marco Polo made reference to seeing the ark about 1300 A.D.

In 1887, an archbishop from Persia reported having seen the
